GOLDWING TRIVIA The first appearance of the Goldwing was at the Cologne Motorcycle Show in October 1974. It was a flat-4 999cc motorcycle. It got immediate attention because of some cutting edge technology for the time. This includes: A water cooled engine, only the second Japanese motorcycle to have it (1972 Suzuki GT750 was a water cooled 3 cylinder 2 stroke). Virtually the first motorcycle ever to have a fuel pump. What appeared to be a fuel tank was actually the electronics bay and radiator overflow. The real fuel tank was placed under the seat. Shaft Drive. German BMWs were noted for using this on touring motorcycles, but it was a first on a large capacity exported Japanese motorcycle (Marusho, a Japanese manufacturer of the 1950's and 1960's used shaft drive on all their models). Very quiet, partly by use of a one piece silencer box under the swing arm. Transmission underneath the engine (instead of behind it). This is a popular car layout (e.g. Mini Minor), but first use on a motorcycle. Rumor Has It! (This is only rumor through the grapevine) Honda Motor Company today announced its plans for the new 2009 GL-2000 Goldwing touring bike. The new Goldwing will replace the industry-leading GL-1800 Goldwing which went into production in 2001. The 2009 GL-2000 Goldwing will feature a larger 2.0 litre (2000 cc) 6-cylinder engine matched to a new 6-speed transmission. Honda claims the new engine will produce 165 horsepower and 157 foot pounds of torque. "This new powerplant and transmission should provide the kind of power and torque Goldwing owners have come to expect" a company official says. With the new 6-speed transmission, the 2.0 liter engine turns only 2,500 rpm at 70 miles per hour. The new Goldwing will increase the safety of its riders with standard ABS brakes on all 2009 models. A rider airbag is also available as an option on the level 4 model. The 2009 GL-2000 will be offered in the following configurations: Standard features on all 2009 GL-2000 Goldwing models: - New 2000cc 6-cylinder engine with 6-Speed transmission - Linked ABS brakes (front and rear) - Dramatically improved suspension with adjustable pre-load front and rear - 6.9 gallon fuel capacity - Adjustable seat (can be raised/lowered up to 1.5 inches) and rider backrest can be moved forward/backward. - Adjustable windscreen (electronically adjustable is optional) - Cargo capacity has been increased to 45 liters per saddlebag and 65 litres for the trunk. - Heated handgrips and heated seat - L.E.D. tail/brake lights and lighted trunk spoiler - New instrument cluster includes speedo/tach/engine temp/voltage/ambient temp/gear indicator/tire pressure/trip computer (see below) - DC Accessory Outlet in dash glovebox - Trip Computer displays: Miles to Empty/Avg Miles Per Gallon/Current Miles Per Gallon -Intercom features improved audio quality and passenger volume/on/off switch -Honda Warranty 3-year Unlimited Miles (up to 4 year optional extended warranty) BASE MODEL - includes comfort package (heated handgrips and seat), ABS brakes front and rear, 85-watt 4-speaker stereo with MP3/iPod connector. In addition, the completely re-designed Goldwing offers owners lower maintenance costs with easier access to regular maintenance areas such as air cleaner, oil drain plug, oil filter and oil dipstick. A quick-remove engine protector plate has also been added to guard the oil pan from potential damage caused my road debris. The new Goldwing is expected to appear in dealer showrooms in September 2008 and will be offered in the following colors: Pearl White, Pearl Yellow, Pearl Orange, Illusion Blue, Black, Titanium and Illusion Red. Have you thought about acquiring heated riding gear? My loving family graciously purchased me a set of Synergy Heated Riding Gear as a Christmas Present. The gear is the RideMaster brand with the Carbon Fiber Heating Elements. If you know me very well then you know that when I am away from the house I am on my 06 Goldwing. I ride my bike to work everyday. Until I was given this set of gear, most mornings when the temperature was below 45 degrees I started to get uncomfortable before arriving at the Air Base. I now feel confident when my garage door goes up that the ride will be pleasant and I'll arrive at my destination as comfortable as my friends and coworkers who prefer the other mode of transportation. My feedback on the Synergy brand of heated clothing is as follows. I ride 28 Miles one way to work with nothing more than a Tee shirt under my Synergy Jacket and a Joe Rocket over it with the water proof liner installed. The Synergy Jacket is hot, the coldest morning we had so far was 18 degrees, as registered by the thermometer on the bike, and I ran highway 167 at 70 MPH with the heat on the Jacket set to Medium. High was a little too much heat for me. At about 35 Degrees I turn it to low. At 55 I turn it off altogether. The other article of my ensemble are the heated gloves which would be worth the investment by themselves. My hands were always cold no mater what brand or how many pair of gloves I had layered. Now I press the little green button one time and set those bad boys to nuclear meltdown and arrive at work with a big grin on my face. Can you tell I really like the Ridemaster Synergy Heated Gloves and Gear... One bit of honesty and something you will read about if you do the research on these gloves is the fact that the thumb on both hands needs another ribbon of heat as they will get cool but not uncomfortable. This gear appealed to me due to the fact that they come with all the wiring and controllers. There is nothing extra to purchase. The gloves come with a splitter to hook up the gloves independent of the jacket. This gives you the ability to adjust the temp of the jacket independent of the gloves. If you have a story about how to get through the cool months of riding or want to toot the horn of your manufacturer of heated riding gear drop me a few lines and I'll post them here for all to enjoy and compare |
